Got My Heart In Your Hands, Like A Time Bomb Ticking

First off I would like to apologize and say sorry for the lack of posting recently and that will probably haunt me this coming week as well. As a college student approaching finals week, life has become hectic and I have let that affect how much I post on here. So, sorry for that, but it is going to get better soon!

I do want to keep sharing music with you though so here is the new All Time Low video that they posted this afternoon! I posted about the band a couple weeks ago and acknowledge that they aren't the cleanest of bands but this song is awesome in my opinions and is the best off of their new record (which isn't saying much, but that's another story for a different day!).

I also included the acoustic version of the song that was a bonus track on their record. It is really good and is on my "Sleep" and "Study" playlists. So check out the videos! I hope you like them and will bare with me this next week or so and my lack of posting if it happens! You guys are awesome and I hope know that I appreciate the fact that you read this! Have a great night!

Deck The Halls Yo!

FINALLY! Thanksgiving was this past weekend (I hope you had a great one by the way!). That means one thing that can be described by five words....IT IS FRICKIN' CHRISTMAS TIME! In honor of this, I would like to share with you the awesomeness of the christmas video that the band Tenth Avenue North put out earlier this month. It was all done in one take which is pretty sweet! Plus they were creative and kept it simple to keep it low budget. So enjoy the humorous video and the awesome Christmas music! And, make sure you are getting yourself stoked; because, there is more Christmas music to come here on Off the Record! It's going to be saaaaaaweet! Love you guys and hope you have a great day! :)

Thanksgiving - Music Style: Part 2

In this post I am going to focus on the top 5 mainstream bands that I am thankful for!

5. Underoath
Underoath is arguably one of the most popular hardcore bands out there. They have been around since 1997 and have gone through multiple member changes leaving the group with none of the original members. I do still enjoy their newest albums, but my favorites are They're Only Chasing Safety and Define the Great Line. When I was first introduced to the hardcore music scene, Underoath was one of the first bands that I was shown. I have been an avid fan since that day!  They're Only Chasing Safety has been one of my all time favorite albums based on its catchy and powerful lyrics. The songs are driven and powerful when they need to be but it isn't over done like how so much hardcore is now. My friend Chad describes it brilliantly in one of his blog posts. He said, "The band found a way to make this album heavy and imposing without the baggage of 18 breakdowns in every song" (The link to Chad's blog post is under this paragraph! Check it out!) To top it off, up until their latest album, Disambiguation, their drummer Aaron Gillespie did a majority of the clean vocals. To be able to drum like that and sing on top of it is a God given talent. It is phenomenal. This band has impacted me since the beginning of my interest in music, and continues to do so with their meaningful lyrics. Thanks UnderOath for helping me discover my love for music and its power to touch people's lives.

4. Haste the Day
Haste the Day is Indianapolis' "poster-boy" metalcore band. The group has been around for a little over a decade. They began in Indianapolis and finished in Indianapolis with a sold out farewell show this past summer. Haste the Day has impacted me with how they act off of the stage. Each member hangs around after the shows and talks to everyone and takes the time to invest in their fans lives. They truly care about who listens to their music and spends money and time to go to their shows, even after ten years of playing and selling out shows. The guys even would stop and talk if you walked up to them in downtown Indy somewhere. It is great. I am assuming they still do the same, but haven't really run into any of them since their final show. These guys have inspired me to be a better man, and if I ever make it anywhere in the music industry they have been an example and set of role models reminding me to not lose sight of my priorities and let my career feed into my pride and forget to invest in others around me that want to talk. If any of you guys, old members or most recent, by chance read this: thank you so much for everything you did and continue to do in the community of Indiana! Words can't even describe how appreciative I am for the time you have taken to help me learn and grow.

3. Ace Enders
Ace Enders is a smaller artist who has been apart of many other groups such as The Early November, and I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody's Business. Ace writes with such a unique style using profound lyrics to impact listeners. His writings strike chords within the listeners with lyrics such as: "We need to know our hearts beat louder than shotguns sing, and we need to feel that our minds work harder than factory wheels. And we need to know that we are worth much more than a credit score," and "Sometimes all you need in life is emergency, to take time and figure out what you're doing here." These  lyrics along with so many others have caused me personally to sit back and look at life in a different light. Thank you Ace on helping me gain a new perspective on life itself.

2. The Rocket Summer
Singer/Song writer Bryce Avary started this group back in 2000. The amazing thing about Avary and his music is that not only does he write all of it, he produces it and records each instrument track himself. Avary takes a group of his friends on tour with him to play the music live, but he records each record himself. It is insane! Avary and The Rocket Summer have taught me that not all music has to be about bad things in life, or girls for that matter haha. Although there is nothing wrong with songs about relationships and girls (he has plenty of those too), there is so much more out there to write about! Avary focuses a majority of his writing into a positive light and it is awesome to listen to! He has also inspired me to keep writing and learning about other instruments beyond just guitar! Thank you Bryce from the inspiration and reminder to try to keep a positive outlook on life even when times get tough.

1. Deas Vail
I just recently really started to dig into the group Deas Vail and listening to their stuff a lot more intently. They too have had similar effects on me as The Rocket Summer and Ace Enders. Their lyrics are profound to me and so much deeper than so much of today's standards in music. They use metaphors such as "the shoreline calls to sea," and "it's time we chase the smoke of our guns and make this right." All three of Deas Vail's studio albums have struck me and a lot of times made me stop dead in my tracks and think over a lyric that just registered in my mind differently. That is precisely one of the things I love about this group. I can listen to a song of theirs more than a hundred times, and then one day listen to it and something totally new hit me like a ton of bricks slapping me in the face. Okay, so that is a bad analogy, but Deas Vail has a way of putting pieces of life into words and metaphors that make sense and can even be interpreted differently by different people. Going off of that, those lyrics can even be interpreted differently by the same person depending on their mood or state of mind that day. It is a wonderful and refreshing thing. Thank your Deas Vail for challenging me to grow through your lyrics and for being able to reach out to your listeners even if you have never met them!

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but wish that it was music from bands like the 10 I have mentioned today that got played nationally on the radio, and groups like that got the recognition. People could see what they stand for and love. People would see that it isn't about the money. I guess I can hope and dream of that as much as I want, but we will still get sucked into the shallow lyrics of a mainstream pop culture. Anyways, I digress.

I hope that you have had a wonderful thanksgiving and were able to spend time with your families. I am very thankful for you and the fact that you are taking the time to read this and any of my previous posts! I hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend! Happy Thanksgiving! :)

With love,

Thanksgiving - Music Style: Part 1

Today, as we all celebrate a day of Thanksgiving by hanging out with family, eating a lot of food, and remembering what we are thankful for I just wanted to take the chance to share with you some of the bands that I am extremely thankful for! In doing this I wanted to make sure that I expressed my thanks for the mainstream bands that have impacted my life, but also my friends who are in bands from the midwest area! That being said, I decided to split up today's post into two parts. The second post will be posted later this evening, so make sure to check back this evening for Part 2!

In this first post I wanted to focus on the bands from the midwest area that I have become friends with. So here you go:

5. My Hidden Track
I don't personally know these guys, but they are from Indianapolis and I have loved their music since high school. They are broken up now, but I still play their record Hey Love at least once a week (it is actually serving as my soundtrack to writing this post haha)! They are great musicians and I love their sound. I will say that I am not a fan of some of the language they use, but overall their sound is great if you can get past a little profanity. They have left a huge impression on the music scene in Indianapolis. Thanks for the great music guys!

4. PIONEER
PIONEER, was originally formed as the group News From Verona and recently changed their name and signed to the label Slospeak Records. Back in high school I put on a fundraiser show and these guys came out to play for free to help the cause. Ever since then they have been good friends and I am really excited to see where they go! I am very thankful for their generosity and the impact they are making on the music scene! I hope that they continue to grow and are able to reach the lives of others as they begin touring again. Thanks for everything guys!!!

3. Forgotten Tragedy
FT decided to separate back in 2009. A lot of the former members are pursuing other projects, and some are pursuing careers. Two of them are in the band ForeverAtLast, and two of them are doing their own side project Pensive Sky (check them out on Facebook and listen to their new track "In The Desert!" It is really good! :]). I am very thankful for this group and all of their members from earlier on all the way up to their final lineup. I first saw these guys when I was a freshman in high school. After the show I talked to one of them and he invited me to their weekly Bible study and they took me in as a friend straight from the get go! This group gave me my first chance to get involved and help in the world of music and without them, I would have no foundation which I would be able to grow on like I am now! So thank you so much AJ, Ana, Craig, J-Dub, Jared, Mikey, Tip, and Zeke! You guys are incredible and I can't thank you enough!

2. Sosaveme
I first met Sosaveme at show in Franklin, IN. After their set I went up to them to buy a record and tell them that they did a great job that night. Little did I know that I had just met some of my best friends and role models. I loved their set so much that the next time they came back for a show, I made sure that I didn't miss it. After the set I went up to talk to them again, and they remembered me! This blew my mind! Ever since then, I have gotten to grow closer to them and learn from them. They have served as role models of mine in what it means to grow and be a man of faith. The lyrics to each song have connected to me in a way that most music hasn't been able to. When listening to their albums it's hard to not think that a lot of the songs were written for something that I am going through in life. I have discussed this with some friends and they say they get the same feeling. It is crazy how that works. SSM just released their newest album The Garden and I would highly recommend giving a listen if you get the chance! Thanks Austin, Jon, Justin, and Nick for being their for me, and helping me try to figure out this thing called life. I love you guys and am very thankful for what you do!

1. ForeverAtLast
The members of this group have become some of my greatest friends. They are pretty much like brothers and a sister to me, and I am very greatful for that! They have each influenced me more than I can put to words. This has occurred both through their music and through their lives and willingness to reach out. They truly care about those they come in contact with which is hard to find in musicians these days. I am also very excited for them because they just signed their first label contract to Sancrosanct Records and will be releasing their debut record this coming Spring! Make sure you check it out when it drops! Brittany, Chris, Jared, Jordan, and Mikey..Thank you so much for all that you have done to help me grow as a person, a friend, and a musician! I love you guys!

Hands Down This Is The Best Day I Can Ever Remember

We're going to take it old school tonight and look at the song Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional! Dashboard has been making a music for a long while and is led by the singer/song writer Chris Carrabba (picture to the left). Carrabba was also formerly the vocalist for the group Further Seems Forever before pursuing the Dashboard project.

Dashboard has put out a total of six studio albums. The single Hands Down was released as part of the third studio album "A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar." It is one of their most popular songs and is about what Carrabba describes as one of the best nights of his life. The video of the song I chose is a live recording of the full band performing live from Abbey Road Studios. There are many different acoustic versions floating around but this is my personal favorite performance of the song. This video also includes a little description of the song from Carrabba himself, which describes what I think is a great part of music and what draws me to it. I hope that you like it!

Check back tomorrow to see my special Thanksgiving Edition Post featuring the list of the top 10 bands that I am thankful for!

This Is Indiana, Yea We Do It Big

In honor of one of my favorite college basketball teams, the Indiana Hoosiers, going 4-0 with a win last night over Savannah State I have decided to share with you all the awesomeness of the "This Is Indiana" music video.

This Is Indiana is a video put together by Brice Fox and Daniel Weber, two IU students who graduated last year. They put together the song and video and it exploded over the IU campus in Bloomington, Indiana. Eventually Fox and Weber even got their faces put on the side of a bus on campus. My favorite thing about the video is the fact that they threw in clips of classic games and moments. It's pretty sick!

I included the original video, along with a remix that Fox made with Billy Van (a dubstep producer) and posted earlier this month. They are both really good so check them out and get ready, because IU basketball is gaining some momentum! :)

I Just Want You To Know That You Deserve The Best

Hello! This is the last installment of this week's series on The Sing Off. Tonight's post is from this season, and it is Delilah performing Lil Wayne's song How To Love. I'll admit that every now and then I get into a Lil Wayne mood, but it doesn't happen often. I will reassure however that this performance resembles him in no way and it is just phenomenal. This performance has been one of my favorites to see and listen to on Spotify over and over again.

Delilah is a group of all girls. Some of them are from groups that performed in previous seasons and didn't make it. I think it is safe to say that they have been my favorite group on the show out of all three seasons. Anyways, as I mentioned before they bring a new twist to Lil Wayne's song in this performance. They keep it clean and leave out the sketchy verses along with bringing a true emotion to the song that Lil Wayne can't portray. Listening to girls belt out the bridge, you can tell there is a pain and a meaning behind it that they feel. It's so hard to describe. It is full of really strong lyrics. My favorite is the line, "I just want you to know that you deserve the best, baby you're beautiful." Alright, well I will stop rambling now. The video is great, so check it out here and I hope that you enjoy it!

Talk to you soon!

A Girl Like You Is A Dream Come True

My second pick for the Sing Off series this week is actually from last night's episode of the show! It is of the group Vocal Point. VP is a group of guys from BYU, a university in Utah and is one of the largest religious universities in the nation. The group has performed pretty well up to this point, but this performance was one of, if not THE best that they have pulled off. They did a cover of Bobby Brown's song Every Little Step.

This performance made it on my list because of the different parts and roles they each have and how they fit together so well. It is exactly what a cappella should be in my opinion. Plus the percussionist's solo is absolutely sick! Check it out and you will see what I mean!

Don't forget to check back tomorrow to see what my favorite Sing Off performance is, as well as what is to come on the blog! Love you guys and hope you are having a great start to your week!

She's A Looker, Don't Stand A Chance

Here's the deal. I am currently addicted to the show The Sing Off. For those of you who have never seen it or even heard of it, it is pretty much the a cappella American Idol. It is a competition of many groups of musicians that use only their voices, percussion and all. It is pretty sick! I know a lot of people may not like it, but if you aren't totally disgusted by it then keep giving it a chance. It may grow on you.

Well, now that that is said. I have decided to do a three part series on my favorite performances from The Sing Off. Today's pick comes from the first episode of last season (Season 2). It is the group Pitch Slapped's performance of Good Girls Go Bad which is originally done by Cobra Starship. I would like to point out that I don't particularly like the lyrics of the song, but there is one part where they split the guys and girls and do gang vocals in the performance and it is really stinking cool. Here is the video, I hope that you enjoy it!

Tell Me Something Sweet To Get Me By...

To conclude this week's set of YouTube covers I picked one of my favorite songs. I know that I talked about this song earlier on, but I love it so much that I decided to share it again for those new to reading the blog! The song is If It Means A Lot To You, by the band A Day To Remember. This song really strikes home to me because I have a lot of friends that are in the music industry and I personally hope to work in it one day as well. The lyrics to the song were written by ADTR's front man Jeremy McKinnon and the track also features Sierra Kusterbeck from VersaEmerge. McKinnon's words express the hardships of being on the road touring all of the time. Although the song is focused mostly on a relationship between a guy and a girl, I feel as if it relates to any friendship when someone is on the road touring. There is a lot of stress put on certain friendships and it can get hard.

This Wild Life is the group that did the cover, and all though they don't present the back and forth between a female and male vocalist, they still nail the cover. It is by far the best I have found yet. If you like this version I would suggest YouTube searching the original because it is cool to see how both sides of the story are represented from Jeremy and Sierra.

I hope you enjoyed it and have a great rest of the week! Make sure to check back soon for some more music! Love you guys!

We're Gonna Dance Forever

Hellllllo!  Ok, so last night I was hanging out with some friends and watching the show The Sing Off and it has gotten me into an a cappella mood all day. A cappella is a style where the songs are done entirely by voices and no instruments.  This translates into today's cover being from the YouTube a cappella wonder-boy Mike Tompkins. Mike started off with the song Dynamite by Taio Cruz and has since gained over 5 million views on that video alone!  Today's video is Chris Brown's song Forever, and it is one of my favorites that he has posted and it pretty much speaks for itself, so check it out!

I will say that since it is studio produced there are definitely some small effects and EQing (mixing) to make the song sound fuller and thicker if you will, but it is still pretty dang impressive!

Also, I attached a fun video here of Mike teaching and producing a remake of his cover with the Today Show's anchors like Matt Lauer, Al Roker and Ann Curry. If you have some extra time it is pretty funny and shows a little more of how his tracks are broken down and the process he takes to make each song.

I hope you have a great day and check back soon! :)

We Were The Kings and Queens of Promise

Hey everyone! I hope you are having a great Monday thus far!

While going through previous posts trying to evaluate how I could improve my entries on here, I realized that I hadn't really shown any YouTube covers like I had promised at the beginning! Coincidentally, I saw on Cobus Potgieter's Facebook this afternoon that he is trying to get 1 million fews on one of his newest videos. He is only about 32,000 views away, and I decided to try to help him out a bit! This is his cover of 30 Seconds to  Mars' song Kings and Queens. It is really cool because not only is he a phenomenal drummer, but he is doing it on the side of a flippin' mountain! I am not a film kind of guy but I can't imagine taking all of that gear up to a mountain along with a drum kit would be easy along with trying to power any production equipment like a soundboard! So, check it out and if you like it pass it on to some friends and let's help Cobus get to 1 million views! Also, don't forget to check back later this week for some more YouTube covers!

The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year...Well Almost

First and foremost I want to clarify one thing. I LOVE CHRISTMAS! I love everything about it. The joy, the snow, the music, the family, the food, and most importantly what it stands for. I am not trying to be some bah-hum-bug Scrooge by any means, so please don't think that that is my aim.

My biggest hang up of the holiday season is the ever-present (no pun intended ;]) premature launch of Christmas music. Every year, on November 1st it seems like some people in this world go into the mode of, "HOLY COW CHRISTMAS SEASON IS HERE AND IT'S TIME FOR CHRISTMAS MUSIC ALL DAY EVERYDAY!!!!!" AHHHH CHRISTMAS!" Even Justin Bieber released his Christmas album on November 1st this year!

As I said before, I abso-freaking-lutely LOVE Christmas music. I mean shoot dang, I have over 2 gigabytes of it on my iTunes that just sits there for all but a month or so of the year! I even suffer the temptation to start listening to it all now. For example: the other day I was sitting in McDonald's trying to get some homework done and while browsing my iTunes library I came across the Christmas songs put out by Coldplay and Owl City. It took more effort than it probably should have to not click play.

Anyways, my point is this: Although the weather is starting to get colder and the sun is departing us earlier and earlier each night, it is way to soon to be listening to Christmas music. Granted, that is just my opinion, but I mean we still have a national holiday between us and legitimate winter/holiday season...or are we just skipping over Thanksgiving now? Ok, that is a bit dramatic but you get the picture.

To conclude my musings and ranting, I urge you to heed these next few sentences and take them to heart. If you are one of those that busts out the music on the first day of November, please take this with a grain of salt. Christmas music is designed to be short lived. It is designed to last for a little more than a month, and then die off. It is meant to build off the hype and anticipation that develops over those 10 months. Premature listening can kill the life of Christmas music and make it get old and die off before it should. Please consider joining me in fighting the temptation to listen to Christmas music until at least the day after Thanksgiving. It's only a few more weeks away! Plus, the wait and anticipation will make listening to that first song so much sweeter! We can do this together! I promise! :)

Have an opinion on this matter? I would love to hear it! Feel free to write it in the comment box!

Thanks for reading and don't forget to check back soon!

Love you guys!

Music Effecting Marketers

Hello! I am going to stray from my normal style of posting to share this article that my friend @BeTheLink (hit him up on Twitter if you are on there) sent me!  It is about how live music is effecting brand marketers which intrigued me since I am taking my first marketing class and am learning a lot about it. So here you go. Also, make sure to check back tomorrow for some more music!
